THÍCH CA PHẬT ĐÀI ( Bà Rịa - Vũng Tàu )


Thích Ca Phật Đài ( Buddha Shrine ) is located 20 km from the center of Vũng Tàu and sits on the north face of Núi Lớn mountain. In 1957, Mr. Lê Quang Vinh built a small temple at this site and called it Thiền Lâm Tự. In 1961, a larger temple was proposed by the many Buddhists in this region. Work commenced on July 20, 1961 and was completed in 1963. Various statues along the stairs leading to the pagoda describe the history of Buddha: Thích Ca Mâu Ni at his birth, his introduction to Buddhism and his becoming a Buddha. Thích Ca Phật Đài is made famous by its large and serene environment and its statue of Buddha, 6.2 m tall and in the meditation pose , perching on a pedestal 4 m high shaped like a lotus.


THIÊN THAI PAGODA ( Bà Rịa - Vũng Tàu )

 


The Pagoda Thiên Thai is located at the foot of Chân Tiên mount ( Long Đất , Bà Rịa ). It was founded by Most Venerable Thanh Kế Huệ Đăng in 1909. Huệ Đăng also etablished in 1931 Thiên Thai Zen School, Liên Hữu Association and printed Bát Nhă Magazinẹ . The pagoda has four sides of the Buddha Shrine with the statues around a stone pillar. In the main side is placed the relics of Buddha. In front of the pagoda is Thiên Bửu stupa area which has been built on a large scale .


XÁ LỢI PAGODA ( Sài G̣n )


Xá lợi Pagoda is situated at Saigon . The South Vietnam Association of Buddhist Study built this pagoda in 1956 according to the design of architects Trần Văn Dương and Đỗ Bá Vinh. The altar on the first floor, dedicated to Sakyamauni Buddha, is soberly decorated. The Sakyamuni Buddha statue is an excellent work of art made by Lê Văn Mậu in 1954.


VĨNH NGHIÊM PAGODA ( Sài G̣n )


Vĩnh Nghiêm Pagoda was constructed in Sài G̣n between 1964 and 1971 in the area of 8.000m² following the design of architect Nguyễn Bá Lăng. The Kwan-Yin Tower ( located on the left of the pagoda ) classic style of 35m seven-storey tower with strong Japanese influences was built with the assistance of the Japan-Vietnam Friendship Association. This structure is the biggest of the Vietnam Buddhist Association.


VẠN HẠNH MONASTERY ( Sài G̣n )

  


Vạn Hạnh Monastery ( Vạn Hạnh Thiền Viện ) is located at Phú Nhuận , Sài G̣n. It was built in 1976 by Most Venerable Thích Minh Châu as a place for Buddhist practice and study . In the main hall stands a statue of Sakyamuni Buddha sitting in meditation on a lotus throne . Vạn Hạnh is the Viet Nam Budhism Higher College Office, the Institute of Buddhism Research Office and the Translation Council of Viet Nam Prayer Book Office .


GIÁC LÂM PAGODA ( Sài G̣n )


Giác Lâm Pagoda is the oldest pagoda in Tân B́nh , Sài G̣n. It wat built in 1744 and restored in the early 19th and 20th centuries. In front of the altar there are 49 oil lamps and 49 statuettes of bodhisattvas. The Pagoda has more than 100 ancient statues. In front of the pagoda is a big bodhi tree, a gift from Sri Lankan great monk Narada in 1953. Giac Lam Pagoda has been recognized as a national historic heritage site.


GIÁC VIÊN PAGODA ( Sài G̣n )


Giác Viên Pagoda is located in a quiet area near Đầm Sen (lotus pond), Sài G̣n. It was built in 19th century ( Nguyễn Dynasty ) with the ancient architecture. The main shrine, also a big hall, is 360m2 in area, and uses to worship Buddha. There are corridors in East and West, a room for the monks to prepare clothing before assisting the Superior Monk, and a large compartment at the rear. Along the corridors, there are small altars with worshipping items.


PHỤNG SƠN PAGODA ( Sài G̣n )


Phụng Sơn Pagoda , often called as G̣ Pagoda (Sài G̣n) was founded by Bonze Liễu Thông in the early 19th century . It was rebuilt in 1904 and restored in 1960 . The pagoda has about 40 ancient statues, the head statues and ceramic items are belonging to Óc Eo civilization .


DÂU PAGODA ( Bắc Ninh )


There are 6 names called for this Pagoda: Thanh Đạo Tự , Pháp Vũ Tự , King Pagoda , Bà Pagoda , Dâu Pagoda , Diên Ứng Pagoda . The Pagoda is situated in Dâu, Bắc Ninh Province. Built in the 3rd century, Dâu Pagoda is the oldest pagoda in Việt Nam. In the beginning, the pagoda was a Buddhist center well known throughout the country and abroad. At the end of the 4th century, Ch’an Master Vinitaruci gave lectures and the first Vietnamese Buddhist doctrine was produced there. Mạc Đĩnh Chi enlarged the pagoda in the 14th century and the pagoda underwent several renovations during the following centuries. In the pagoda’s yard, there is a three - storey tower called Ḥa Phong. In the tower, there is a large bell produced during the Cảnh Thịnh Dynasty (1793), a big bronze gong produced during the 18th year of the reign of Minh Mạng (1817) and statues of Pháp Vân, Kim Đồng, and Ngọc Nữ, followers of the Goddess of Mercy according to Buddhist legends.


ĐỨC LA PAGODA ( Bắc Ninh )


Đức La Pagoda ( also known as Vĩnh Nghiêm Tự ) built in the 12th century , was a centre of the Trúc Lâm Trinity: King Trần Nhân Tông, Pháp Loa and Huyền Quang resident monks. The pagoda is situated in an area of rolling hills (80km north of Hà Nội - Bắc Ninh). In the background is the Cổ Tiên mountain range and to the left is the batiks of the Lục River . In front of the pagoda are vast ricefields dotted with villages and hamlets hidden behind green bamboo groves. Over 700 years have elapsed but the architectural structures remain intact. Đức La Pagoda remains a major training centre of Buddhism with wooden shelves for the printing of Buddhist sutras still conserved as evidence of the important role of Vĩnh Nghiêm Tự.


CHÙA HƯƠNG ( Hà Tây )


Hương Pagodas or Perfume Pagodas ( Chùa Hương ) and Hương Tích Cave belonging to Hương Sơn commune, Hà Tây province, 70km southwest of Hà Nội. Hương pagodas consists of a group of caves, pagodas in a pressing architectural ensemble, both natural and man made. The Trinh Temple where visitors stop and burn incense for the God of the Mountain, locates on the right Ngủ Nhạc Mountain . There are Thiên Trù Pagoda which built in 17th century ;the bell tower (8,2m high, 7,8m wide and 9,2m large) is shaped as a lotus flower. The Tiên Sơn Pagoda and the Giải Oan Pagoda locate from Thiên Trù Pagoda about 1 km. The Giải Oan Pagoda is a small one to worship Bodhisattva Quan Âm, located on a high mountain in Núi Tiên Grotto. The Hương Tích cave is located deep into a mountain, 120 steps from the gate which looks like the mouth of a dragon. Inside the Cave, there are statues of Lord Buddha, of Bodhisatva (the Goddess of Mercy) and of others which are made of green stone. A big bell, still in existence, was also cast in 1793.


TÂY PHƯƠNG PAGODA ( Hà Tây )


Tây Phương Pagoda is located on Tây Phương mountain in Yên Village, Hà Tây Province. The pagoda was built in the 3rd century and was undergone several restorations. In 1794 under the Tây Sơn regime, it was completely renewed, hence its present design. It comprises three successive constructions : the Hall of Prostration, the Main Shrine, and the Sanctuary, all with doubletiered roofs. It seems that this architectural arrangement is inspired by Buddhist and Confucianist thought: the three constructions symbolize the three forces governing the world. The pagoda has approximately 80 statues of all sizes representing former monks who stayed at the pagoda. It also possesses a bell molded in 1796 and many valuable altars of emperors of the Cảnh Thịnh dynasty. Tây Phương Pagoda is not only an historical site with valuable architecture, but also a scenic spot in Hà Tây Province.


LINH SƠN PAGODA ( Đà Lạt )


Linh Sơn pagoda is located on a hill about 700m from the centre of Đà Lạt. The pagoda was built in 1938 with the harmoniuos Oriental-Asian architecture . A 1,250 kg bronze statue of Sakyamuni Buddha was made in 1952 and placed in the main hall. Next to the pagoda is a room used for publishing Buddhist pamphlets and books. The sculptures of dragon, unicorn, tortoise and phoenix are laid around the pagoda area.


LONG SƠN PAGODA ( Nha Trang )


The pagoda was first built on Mount Trại Thủy northwest of Nha Trang in 1886 . In 1900, the pagoda was damaged in a storm and was rebuilt down the mountain in its present location. The pagoda underwent further restorations in 1940, 1971, and 1975. This is the biggest pagoda in Khánh Ḥa, formerly the Branch of the Buddhist Institute of Central Vietnam. There is also a 14m red brass statue of Buddha sitting on a lotus pedestal. At the top of the hill behind the pagoda is a huge white Buddha statue seated on a lotus blossom which is visible from all around.


CHÙA MỘT CỘT  ( Hà Nội )


The One Pillar Pagoda (Chùa Một Cột ) is an architectural gem unique to Vietnam. Tradition says that it was first constructed in 1049 during the early Lư dynasty. Legend has it that King Lư Thái Tổ dreamed of the goddess Quan Âm sitting on a lotus leaf and offering him a son. Struck by the dream, the Emperor married a peasant girl who soon provided him with a male heir. In gratitude, the king built this pagoda to honor the goddess. Some have said that the pagoda resembles a lotus climbing out of the water. The pagoda was destroyed a number of times over the centuries, most recently in 1954 during the French Colonial retreat, but was reconstructed in its present form in 1955 with a concrete pill.


TRẤN QUỐC PAGODA ( Hà Nội )


Trấn Quốc ( means National Founder) is the oldest temple in Hà Nội. It was constructed in the 6th century during the reign of King Lư Nam Đế and was named Khai Quốc ( means "founding the country") which sat on the bank of the Red River but was moved to the island in the West Lake during the reign of King Lê Kinh Tông (1600-1618) on an island in the West Lake. One of the present statues inside the pagoda was fashioned in 1639. Trấn Quốc is also an active monastery.


THIÊN MỤ PAGODA ( Huế )


Thiên Mụ pagoda overlooks the Perfume River ( Sông Hương ) and the beautiful scenery beyond. The 21-meter tall tower is the centerpiece of the pagoda. It also displays a 2000 kilogram bell cast in 1710 and a stele from 1715. The history of Thiên Mụ extends back to 1601, when the pagoda was founded by Nguyễn Hoàng, governor of Thuận Hóa province. Legend says that Nguyễn Hoàng built the pagoda to fulfill a prophecy from a 'fairy woman' (Thiên Mụ) that a great lord would arrive to build a pagoda for the prosperity of the country.


TỪ ĐÀM PAGODA ( Huế )


Từ Đàm Pagoda is located in Trường An, 2km south of Huế . Superior Buddhist Monk Minh Hoàng Từ Dung founded it, at the end of the 17th century under Lê Hy Tông reign. It was during the reign of Emperor Thiệu Trị that the pagoda was given the name Từ Đàm. In the center of the pagoda is a tree that was grafted from a sacred tree brought to Vietnam by Buddhists from India in 1936. In 1951, the Buddhist Association Conference was held at the pagoda . In the history of development and religious practice of Vietnamese Buddhism, Từ Đàm Pagoda has been an important center. At present, Từ Đàm is the headquarter of the Vietnamese Buddhist Association of Thừa Thiên province.


TỪ HIẾU PAGODA ( Huế )


Từ Hiếu Pagoda ( Huế) was built in 1843 and restored many times . The three entrance gate was built with 2 domed storeys and roofs topped with statues of Dhamma Guardians which protect the pagoda. Behind the gate is a semi circular pool grown with lotus.


VĨNH TRÀNG PAGODA ( Tiền Giang )


This pagoda near the town of My Tho was built in 1849. From this year, the pagoda was managed by Buddhist Priest Huệ Đăng from Giác Lâm Pagoda in Sài G̣n. He led people to refine the pagoda and named it Vĩnh Tràng Pagoda. The pagoda consists of five buildings, two ornamental yards and 178 pillars. The architecture is a harmonious combination of Asian and European styles, creating the splendid, but simple features of this Buddhist pagoda. Inside the pagoda are many specious statues made of wood, among which there was a collection of 18 Buddhisattvas sculpted in 1907, representing the summit in sculpture in the Mekong River plains.


TÂY AN PAGODA ( An Giang )


Tây An Cổ Tự ( means Ancient Pagoda ) located at Sam mount ( Châu Đốc), was built in 1847 by Governor Doăn Uẩn . The leader monk has made great contribution to the contruction is Đức Phật Thầy Tây An. The complex of architectural structures built within the premises of the pagoda work in harmony with the natural surrounding. The present construction with combination of Oriental and Indian styles . The pagoda has 200 statues made of preciuos wood .There are two large statues of elephants in the pagoda ground. The black elephant with 2 ivories represents power over malice . The white elephant with 6 ivories represents restful mind.


LINH ỨNG PAGODA ( Đà Nẵng )


In the Ngũ Hành Sơn mount (Five Elements Mount), there are two famous pagodas: Linh Ứng and Tam Thai Pagodas, often called together as Non Nước Pagodas. Linh Ứng Pagoda is approximately 8 km from the centre of Đà Nẵng , and overlooks the sea. The pagoda, which was built in the 16th century, has been renovated many times . Precious document concerning the history of the pagoda are safety kept inside. Behind the pagoda is Tàng Chơn cave, 7m wide and 10m long .
